During the midst of these uncertain times, many are asking if they qualify for long term disability benefits because of coronavirus. There are two main groups of people who could qualify for long term disability benefits because of coronavirus.These are:
- People who have a medical condition that makes it unsafe to continue working during the coronavirus because of increased risk of illness or death;
- People who actually become sick because of coronavirus and cannot perform their occupational duties.
The coronavirus, referred to as COVID-19, is a respiratory illness. Coronavirus can be spread from person to person who are in close contact through respiratory droplets. These droplets are produced when an infected person sneezes or coughs. If someone touches a surface or object that has coronavirus on it and then touches his or her nose, mouth, or eyes, they can be infected with the coronavirus.
In terms of long term disability, coronavirus can be disabling by itself as an illness and also disabling because it is medically necessary to self-quarantine. In either scenario, you may be entitled to disability insurance benefits.
If you have a chronic medical condition, you may be immunocompromised. Even if you were previously able to work without issue, it may now not be safe to continue working during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, you may be disabled under your employer’s disability insurance policy.
Examples of some medical conditions that can result in a vulnerable or compromised immune system include:
- Chronic respiratory conditions;
- Lupus;
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS):
- Diabetes;
- Renal failure;
- Liver disease;
- HIV/AIDS;
- Leukemia;
- Lymphoma;
- Hypertension;
- Heart disease; and
- Cancer.
Coronavirus attacks the respiratory system, causing significant medical issues. Those with medical issues such as asthma, COPD, lung disease, a history of bronchitis, or other respiratory-related conditions may not be safe at work even if they had no problem working before the coronavirus pandemic.
