If you have a long-term disability claim under a Cigna/LINA policy, then you probably noticed that all communications regarding your claim are now made under the New York Life name. That is because in December 2020, NYL finalized it acquisition of Cigna’s life, accident, and disability insurance business.
New York Life (“NYL”) is the largest mutual insurer in America and with Cigna under its umbrella, it is among the top insurers for life, accident, and disability insurance. Previously, New York Life mainly provided individual disability insurance and not ERISA-governed group policies. With Cigna now a part of the company, a large piece of their business will be group disability insurance policies.
What does this mean for your Cigna LTD claim?
In theory, nothing. Nothing should change with the handling of your LTD claim except that the letters and communications will show New York Life instead of Cigna. It is possible NYL will conduct a sweep of the existing claims and perhaps conduct reviews and potential denials.
As is true with any LTD claim, you should keep an eye on any correspondence or requests for information and respond promptly. If NYL requests updated forms or medical records, provide it as soon as you can. Do not give them an excuse to terminate your claim.
If you are concerned about NYL taking over your Cigna claim, call today to speak with one of our experienced disability insurance attorneys. We are very familiar with Cigna and NYL can help guide you through the process.
