Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Lou Gehrig’s Disease Claims Lawyers

Helping Claimants with ALS Recover Disability Benefits

Also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a rare neurological disease that attacks neurons (nerve cells) in your brain and spinal cord. ALS affects men more often than women and usually strikes between the ages of 40 and 60. No one knows what causes ALS, and there is no cure. Many people die from respiratory failure within 3 to 5 years of developing symptoms, but 10% of people with ALS survive for 10 or more years.

Because ALS affects voluntary muscle movements and the disease gets worse over time, people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are often forced to stop working indefinitely. Those covered by a group disability plan or a private disability policy may be eligible for long-term disability benefits.

If you need help recovering the benefits you are entitled to, Dabdoub Law Firm can help. We have more than 20 years of experience handling claims and recovering disability benefits, and we know how serious your medical condition is.

Call us at (800) 969-0488 to get help with submitting an ALS claim, appealing a denial, or filing a lawsuit against your disability insurance company.

What Are the Symptoms of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis?

The symptoms of ALS begin gradually, and many people do not know there is a problem until the disease has advanced.

The signs and symptoms of ALS include:

  • Difficulty with simple tasks (buttoning a shirt, writing, turning a key in a lock)
  • Awkwardness when walking or running
  • Tripping or stumbling more often
  • Muscle cramps
  • Muscle twitches in the arm, leg, shoulder, or tongue
  • Muscle spasticity (tight or stiff muscles)
  • Muscle weakness (especially in the arms, legs, neck, and diaphragm)
  • Slurred and nasal speech
  • Having a hard time chewing or swallowing

When ALS begins in the arms or legs, it is “limb onset” ALS, and when ALS first presents in speech or swallowing problems, it is called “bulbar onset” ALS.

Any of these symptoms can prevent you from fulfilling the duties of your occupation, and the disease gets worse over time. Individuals with ALS may have trouble moving, swallowing, speaking, and even breathing. As the disease progresses, people with ALS lose their ability to stand, walk, get in and out of bed by themselves, and use their hands and arms. Sadly, people with ALS also have trouble eating, develop anxiety and depression, and eventually need a ventilator to breathe.

In most cases, an ALS diagnosis spells the end of an individual’s career. It should also serve as a qualifying medical condition if you wish to seek long-term disability benefits.

Due to the severity of your illness, your insurance company should approve your claim right away. If you face any delays or denials, our ALS disability claims lawyers at Dabdoub Law Firm can help.
