What is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (“EDS”) is a rare genetic disorder that mostly affects connective tissue such as skin, joints, and blood vessels. Connective tissue is between other body tissue and organs and works to both hold everything together and provide support while at the same time keeps everything separate. EDS is progressive, meaning the condition will worsen over time, and there is no cure.
What are the Symptoms of EDS?
Currently, there are thirteen subtypes of EDS. While each subtype will have its own diagnostic criteria and symptoms, they all affect the connective tissue in one way or another. The most common and least severe subtype is called Hypermobile EDS (hEDS). There is no test to diagnose hEDS but doctors will look at the symptoms and family history in diagnosing it.
Some symptoms of hEDS include:
- Hypermobile joints (joints that stretch further than normal
- Frequent joint dislocations
- Joint pain and tenderness
- Soft, smooth skin that is stretchy and bruises easily
- Osteoporosis
- Early-onset osteoarthritis
- Fatigue
