Interstitial Cystitis Disability Attorneys
Helping People with Interstitial Cystitis Get the Benefits They Deserve
Interstitial Cystitis (“IC”) is a chronic bladder condition which can cause severe pain or discomfort to the bladder and surrounding area. In many cases, the bladder can be inflamed or irritated. People with IC will feel the need to urinate much more frequently and with smaller amounts of urine than people without IC. In fact, it may feel very similar to a urinary tract infection but there is no infection.
Although symptoms can vary from person to person, many people with IC can experience a wide array of symptoms that extend beyond bladder pain and urinary frequency. Additional symptoms include:
- Pelvic floor pain
- Pain in your pelvis or between the vagina and anus in women
- Pain between the scrotum and anus (perineum) in men
- Pain or discomfort while the bladder fills and relief after urinating
- Pain during sex
- Increased pain following menstruation, sitting for a long time, or stress
Although anyone can have IC, women are affected more than men. Currently, the cause of it is unknown. A diagnosis of IC is one of exclusion meaning that IC is diagnosed after other bladder conditions have been excluded. There is also no cure, but, therapies, diet modification, and medication may help.
Depending on the severity, IC can greatly impact one’s life, including their ability to work. If IC makes it impossible for you to go to work, and you are covered under an employer plan or individual disability insurance policy, you may be entitled to short-term or long-term disability benefits.
